Woman fights to dump double fares for paratransit passengers

ATLANTA -- Harriet Bradley, caregiver for 92-year-old Mildred Mallory says enough is enough on paying double fares when traveling Gwinnett Paratransit, then switching to MARTA Mobility.

She says it an outrage that Mallory and others like her have to pay a full fare on one carrier then are forced to pay another full fare on a second carrier. Regular passengers traveling both systems pay only one fare for a fraction of the cost.

Bradley first took her fight first to the MARTA board, then to its chief executive. Now she's gone to the next level, meeting with the executive director of the Atlanta Regional Commission.

She says she wants one fare to use both services.

"Today it was $14.50 roundtrip. When the fare goes up in Gwinnett it's going to be $15.50," Bradley said. "There are about eight people that use the system every day to come into Atlanta -- that's $146! Can you imagine $146? That is more than gas."

GDOT approves $102M in roadwork

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation on Friday approved more than $102 million in 25 new transportation infrastructure improvement and maintenance projects across the state.

"These projects are spread across our state and each one makes an important improvement to the capacity, safety or general condition of our highway system," GDOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith Jr. "And just as, if not more, important, they put millions of dollars into our economy and provide jobs for Georgians."

One of the big projects is in Rome, while another involves highways in Metro Atlanta:

* In Floyd County, $42.6 million will go toward widening 5.5 miles of the West Rome Bypass from south of the Coosa River to north of State Route 20.

Toll lanes less than a month away

Toll lanes less than a month away

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- It won't be long before Gwinnett and DeKalb County drivers will have a choice: to putter in rush hour traffic, or pay for a faster commute.

We now know when the express lanes are going to open up on I-85, between Chamblee Tucker Road and Peachtree Road. Depending on construction and weather, the state will begin charging tolls on Sept. 24 or Oct. 1.

To use that 15 mile stretch of roadway, most drivers will need a Peach Pass.

"We want to give people the earliest time that it could open so that they can register and go ahead and get a Peach Pass," said State Road and Tollway spokesperson Malika Wilkins.

That means you may have less than a month to get your Peach Pass so the SRTA can figure out how much to charge you for using the lanes. They think everyone should get one.
