CHAMBLEE, Ga. -- A father and son were seriously injured when their small-engine plane crash landed in the backyard of a home roughly two miles from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

A spokesperson for the DeKalb County Fire Department says the airport received a distress call from the plane at around 8:15 p.m. Monday.

A short time later, the plane plummeted into a DeKalb County neighborhood. Towering pine trees sheared off the plane's wings as it made its descent.

"I turned around and I heard someone screaming," said neighbor Tom Wroblewski. "And at that point, I realized there was a plane in the backyard."

Wroblewski said he helped free the plane's passenger, a young boy, from the wreckage. The pilot, who is the boy's father, was eventually able to scramble out of the cockpit himself.

Paramedics rushed the pilot to Grady Memorial Hospital and his son to Scottish Rite.

The FAA and NTSB will investigate the cause of the crash.
