Chamblee Run & Rotary Roll coming Apr. 27

CHAMBLEE, Ga. -- This year's Chamblee Run & Rotary Roll 5K will be held Saturday, Apr. 27 at 8 a.m.

The event, which is now in its 14th year, benefits the North Atlanta Rotary Club and Huntley Hills Elementary School.

"We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Huntley Hills Elementary this year," Chamblee recreation coordinator Loren Roberts said in a statement. "We have had great participation in the past from local runners, rollers and sponsors, and we want to see an even bigger crowd this year."

Both the 5K run and the 1K walk/roll will begin at DeKalb Peachtree Airport. The 5K route runs through downtown Chamblee, while the 1K sticks to the PDK grounds.

The "roll" part of the race comes from its wheelchair division.

DeKalb CEO, Board of Commissioners kick off National County Government Month

DECATUR, Ga – DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis announces DeKalb County will join the National Association of Counties (NACo), along with counties across America, in celebrating National County Government Month (NCGM) this April. The month-long celebration aims to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of county government. This year’s theme is “Smart Justice: Creating Safer Communities”.

Since 1991, NACo has encouraged counties across the country to actively promote county government programs and services. To commemorate NCGM, events geared toward citizens and employees will take place at venues around the county.

The Georgia Pest Control Association supports Leukemia & Lymphoma Society event

Ted Veitch, President of the Norcross-based Georgia Pest Control Association (GPCA) announced the tenth annual participation of the organization with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walks. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) relies heavily on funds raised through the GPCA. Since 2004, member companies of the GPCA have raised $876,000 to help fight blood cancers.  Their goal is to reach the $1 million mark this year to celebrate their decade of participation with the Light The Night Walks.

“The Georgia Pest Control Association is proud to partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Light The Night Walk,” said Ted Veitch, the GPCA President. “Light The Night provides a way for our association to work together to raise funds for cancer research and allows us to give back in the communities we serve. I’m excited to announce we raised over $77,000 for LLS in 2012 throughout Georgia.”

Miss America to visit IHOP, Scottish Rite

ATLANTA -- The new Miss America will soon trade her tiara for a chef's hat as she works to raise money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Mallory Hytes Hagan will flip pancakes and greet customers at the Chamblee IHOP on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Hagan's visit to the restaurant is a preview of National Pancake Day, where IHOP guests are invited to make a donation to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in exchange for a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes.

National Pancake Day is Tuesday, Feb. 5. Last year, IHOP customers raised more than $3 million for children's charities.

After preparing breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Jan. 22, Hagan will meet patients in The Zone at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. She will be at the hospital from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

ATLANTA -- More than 200 metro Atlanta middle school students attended a peace rally and workshop hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. over the weekend.

The rally was a kickoff for 40 Days of Peace, which begins Monday. 40 Days of Peace is a commitment to kindness and service that encourages young people to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

At Saturday's rally, speakers encouraged attendees to stop bullying and stay out of gangs. Police officers gave a presentation on how to interact with law enforcement.

A concurrent workshop for the parents in attendance focused on implementing strategies to keep children safe and on the right track in life.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is once again gearing up for the much anticipated 8th annual Big Peach 5K Run/Walk for Blood Cancer set for May 4 and sponsored by Nike and Brookhaven-based retailer, Big Peach Running Co. Since 2006, this popular neighborhood event has raised over $107,000 towards the fight against blood cancer. This year's race will feature a new start and finish area at Town Brookhaven to coincide with the future relocation of the Big Peach Running Co. flagship store in March of this year.

FACAA gears up for Georgia Gives Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) recently announced Georgia Gives Day, to take place on Thursday, December 6.

According to the FACAA, Georgia Gives Day gives people across the state an opportunity to donate to their choice of a nonprofit organization, an effort in total to help change the lives of people in need.

Those participating can donate to a cause nearby by searching locations, or to a cause for a special reason, where organizations are listed by category.
