Finding her long, lost sister after more than 60 years

ATLANTA (WXIA) – Kareemah Rasheed of Chamblee searched and searched for her sister who was adopted 62 years ago. After searching online for years, Rasheed says it has finally happened – she found her.

Her sister, Jennifer Simmons, who lives in Cleveland, didn’t know she had any family. That changed on Friday when Simmons traveled to Atlanta to meet Rasheed face-to-face.

They began a new sisterhood at age 62 and 72.

“I just found out about a month ago," Simmons said.

She lived a life in Cleveland with a secret her adpotive family took to its grave.

“Everyone died the same year my mother my father my aunt my uncle everybody passed away in 1991," she explained.

She may have never known, if not for a mix up at the DMV.  A copy of her birth certificate was required, and the records didn’t at up. 

Man wanted for cooking meth at hotel room

CHAMBLEE, Ga. – Police in Chamblee are searching for a man they say started a fire while making methamphetamine in a hotel room.

Police said the incident happened at the Extended Stay Hotel on Clairmont Road. Authorities say Phillip Carmona, who they believe to be a construction worker from Florida, checked into the hotel on Monday night.

Early Tuesday, a fire alarm went off in Carmona's room.


Man accused of groping women on Chamblee trail

CHAMBLEE, Ga. – Police in Chamblee arrested a man accused of sexually assaulted two women as they walked on a trail.

According to Chamblee Police, a woman said she was groped while walking near the Walmart on Chamblee Tucker Road. As police were responding to that report, another woman called police from the trail and said that she too had been assault.

Both women were able to give police a description of the suspect, and he was arrested within minutes.

Police have charged 23-year-old Kelvin Whitenburg with two counts of sexual battery.

Friends of Anthony Hill push for DA to indict officer involved in fatal shooting.


DECATUR, Ga. -- It's been more than four months since Anthony Hill was shot and killed by a Dekalb County police officer.

DeKalb County's district attorney has yet to say whether he will seek charges against the officer involved.

Man stabbed to death in Chamblee, suspect on the run

CHAMBLEE, Ga. -- A man was stabbed to death inside his Chamblee apartment, and police are now looking for the suspect.

Wilmer Morales-Camacho was found dead Monday morning in his unit at the Chamblee Heights Apartments on Surrey Circle, near Chamblee Dunwoody Road. A family member discovered the body and called 911.

Chamblee Police have issued a warrant for Hermilindo Escobar-Camacho in Morales-Camacho's death. The suspect and victim lived together in the apartment; their relationship was not immediately known.

Escobar-Camacho is 37 year old, Hispanic, 5 feet 4 inches tall and 135 pounds, with brown eyes. He may be driving his green 1997 Toyota Tacoma with Georgia tag PWX6471.

Anyone who sees Escobar-Camacho is asked to call Chamblee Police at 770-986-5000.

Child found in park after murder-suicide

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Police have identified the victims of a murder suicide at a DeKalb County park.

Chamblee police say they found the bodies of 34-year-old Robert Allen Harris and his wife, 38-year-old Nena Harris, at Dresden Park around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Officers say they found the couple's 2-year-old child wandering nearby.

Investigators believe Robert Harris shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself after an argument.

Dashcam video shows final moments of crashed plane

CHAMBLEE, GA (WXIA) – Dash cam video from a Chamblee Police cruiser was released late Friday which showed what are likely the final images of the plane that crashed on Interstate 285 at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard earlier this month.

In the video, the plane can be seen flying low across the view as the police cruiser is facing northward along Peachtree Industrial at a stop light. The plane disappears from view, followed by a plume of thick, black smoke as it crashes on the Perimeter.

The cruiser speeds toward the crash and up the wrong way on the cloverleaf off-ramp onto the interstate, where the flaming wreckage was.

Four people – Greg Byrd, his two sons, Phillip and Christopher, along with Christopher's fiancée Jackie Kulzer – perished when the single-engine Piper PA-32 aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport on May 8.
